(3 November, 2018, Hong Kong) In response to the Education Bureau’s promotion on STEM education, the “Lok Sin Tong 1st Care for Disadvantaged Group – Innovation and Technology Design Competition” is organized by The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon (a.k.a. LST). To commemorate this special occasion, the Launch Ceremony was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University - Chiang Cheng Studio Theatre. Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, JP, Secretary for Education, was invited to officiate the Launch Ceremony.

All Hong Kong secondary and primary school students are eligible to participate. Unlike other similar STEM competitions, this competition not only intends to spearhead the education of innovation and technology, but also aims to encourage students to care for the disadvantaged. Delivering speech at the launch ceremony, Mr. Lee Shing Put, Chairman of LST said that, the disadvantaged suffer from various difficulties in daily life. We provide the opportunity for all students to design and develop products for the disadvantaged. Students will communicate with “users” directly, understanding their problems and needs thoroughly.” We are well aware that the disadvantaged groups in society need our helping hands. Therefore, being one of the school sponsoring bodies, we provide the STEM platform to stimulate interaction, to improve students’ ability in information technology, problem solving and logical thinking, to innovate suitable and applicable products for the disadvantaged. Students could make use of what they have learnt, tackling the problems faced by the disadvantaged.

Enrollment for the competition is closed. Thanks to the overwhelming response, 55 Secondary Schools (71 teams in total) and 47 Primary Schools (69 teams in total) have applied the competition after the application started in June.

Besides, we gratefully invited two units which were awarded in another STEM competition to introduce their products in the sharing session. One of the product is designed by students from Lok Sin Tong Leung Kau Kui College, which is a pair of shoes for assisting the elderly and visually impaired people. This new product can detect the road situation and deduce the chances of falling down. Besides, students from Lok Sin Tong Leung Kau Kui Primary School (Branch) innovated an automatic machine for collecting homework, which is able to reduce manpower waste. Students could understand their social responsibility and serve the community through the STEM platform.

Participants need to design a programme or package to help the disadvantaged by using APPS or IoT technology. They need to produce a 3-minute video, explaining their ideas and how their works will help the disadvantaged. Videos have to be submitted on the Facebook page for public voting before 22 February, 2019. The “Best Popularity Award” will be given to the work with the highest number of “LIKES”. The best 15 proposals and works in the secondary and primary school division respectively will go into the final (30 finalists in total). Notifications will be sent in late March 2019 and the final competition and ceremony will be held in May 2019. Winner and First Runner-up of the secondary and primary School division (4 teams in total) will be offered a free study tour to Germany.
