(24 July, 2019, Hong Kong) The final of “Lok Sin Tong 1st Care for Disadvantaged Group – Innovation and Technology Design Competition” was held on 18 May. The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon (“LST”) organized The Awards Ceremony today at Chiang Cheng Studio Theatre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, JP, Secretary for Education, was invited to officiate the Ceremony.
The theme of this competition was “Care for Disadvantaged Group”, all Hong Kong secondary and primary school students were invited to participate. Lok Sin Tong did not only spearhead the education of innovation and technology, but also aimed to spread the message to the public to care for the disadvantaged. Students designed the product for the need with science knowledge and creativity. More than 100 teams from Secondary School and Primary School joined while only 15 teams (for each) entered the final. Awards (including Champion, 1st Runner-up, 2nd Runner-up, 4th Place and special prizes) were presented in the ceremony. Champion and 1st Runner-up of the secondary and primary School division (4 teams in total) will be offered a free study tour to Germany.
In the ceremony, Dr. Yang Xiao Ling, Chairlady of LST, said that, “We attach much importance to developing STEM education. Through organizing various activities in Primary Schools, like “Mathematics Program” and “The U-STEMist Scheme”, etc. With the efforts of teachers and students, students have won more than 100 scientific and technological awards. For Secondary Schools, we deepen the elements of STEM education, like setting up subject of "Technology and Life Division", and implementing “working mode”. In this way, students can experience interdisciplinary and also be equipped to handle every challenges in the future.”
Chairlady Yang said in the ceremony that, LST also strengthened the hardware to make STEM education to be more comprehensive and effective by establishing "Lee Shing Put STEAM Creative Classroom", “The Leung’s Family STEM Laboratory and Environmental Technology Institute”, “Biotechnology Lab”, “Environmental Technology Education Path", "Environmental Technology Demonstration Classroom" and "Community Environmental Technology Academy" and "Young Maker Lab", etc. One secondary school and one primary school of LST were been appointed as a Professional Development School by the Education Bureau to support the implementation of STEM education in all schools in Hong Kong.
Mr. Kevin Yeung said, “the concept of competition is similar to STEM education.” He hoped students could improve the living quality of the elderly, visually impaired people and disables, and also cultivate positive values.

Lok Sin Tong 1st Care for Disadvantaged Group – Innovation and Technology Design Competition is organized by the LST with the assistance of the Department of Computing of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Department of Electronic Engineering of the City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Association for Computer Education. It is supported by the Education Bureau and Hong Kong Education City. All secondary and primary school students in Hong Kong are eligible to participate.
The competition aims to spearhead the education of innovation and technology, inspire originality through solving problems and applying inter-disciplinary knowledge, and encourage students to care for the disadvantaged. The competition presents participants with new knowledge or tools and encourages them to solve problems by applying logical thinking and information and technology so as to enhance their originality, creativity, and teamwork.
