The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust: HKU Health Companion Programme for Smokers
Background
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon, in collaboration with the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong, has launched the six-year "HKU Health Companion Programme for Smokers," which officially commenced in July 2026.
Programme Details
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Hong Kong, often developing without any symptoms in its early stages. This programme offers complimentary health benefits by providing eligible participants with free, regular blood tests and randomized low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans. It aims to evaluate the effectiveness of LDCT screening in detecting lung cancer at an early, treatable stage among high-risk individuals who currently smoke or have a history of smoking. Your participation will help fill the gaps in local lung cancer screening data and drive the development of healthcare in Hong Kong.
Eligibility Criteria
1. Hong Kong residents aged between 50 and 79 years old;
2. Smoking history of 20 "pack-years" or more;
3. Current smokers, or former smokers who have quit smoking within the past 10 years;
4. Never been diagnosed with lung cancer or found to have lung nodules;
5. Have not had other cancers within the past five years, or are currently undergoing cancer treatment.
